Episode 7i--Feminine Health: Postpartum Depression

Dear sisters, now I would like to talk to you about depression.  Specificall, I mean the depression that women face after child delivery. After giving birth to a baby, having a little depression is a normal issue. This happens because of chemical changes in the body. It is caused by a decrease and increase in hormones in the body.

Depression among women after delivery is common and will stay with them for some time-- even possibly up to a year. It is important to treat this illness. Sometimes this depression increases due to other issues in the family. Women need to know that depression is not due to a problem or weakness in their brains. Depression is a normal illness like other physical illnesses we may get.

Depression after delivery is common. This depression has many causes. For instance, if the woman had depression in her previous delivery, depression after the new delivery can also occur. Getting pregnant at an early age or having a baby crying every night are other causes of depression.

How would we know that the depression a woman has is normal or not and whether she needs to see a doctor to treat it?   You might need to see a doctor if you have these signs. Your mood is off. Sometimes you are happy, but sometimes you are sad. Sometimes the woman cries a lot. She can't sleep, feels bad, worries.  [Sometimes in extreme cases] the mother gets sad and feels like she has no place in this world and tries to kill herself or the baby.

[Sometimes] it is necessary that the mother sees a doctor. Doctors recommend getting counseling which means you talk to a specialist. The specialist helps you to overcome the illness. There are also medications on how to heal this problem. We need to know that it is not in our hands. We are not to be blamed for this. With the passage of time, this problem can be solved.

In general, depression is more in women than in men. Scientific studies tell us that if one man feels depression, there are two women that feel depression. Depression among women has doubled.  We will talk more about mental issues and other problems some other time.
