Episode 7c--Feminine Health: Delivery

Dear sisters, I am Rabia your host. Today, I will talk about child delivery.

In the United States, 67 percent of the deliveries are normal.  Thirtyone percent are delivered through the Cesarean method or operation.  The Cesarean method is used when is there no chance of normal delivery. It is the doctors who decide whether to go with Cesarean or normal delivery.  There are different reasons for the operation: if a mother has pains but the delivery doesn't happen, or, if the baby is not in the right position. If a woman has health issues like heart problems, the mother has diabetes or normal delivery is not possible, then the doctors decide to go with the Cesarean option which is an operation.

Now, I want to talk about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome which occurs when babies are asleep and suddenly die. In the United States, around 3,000 children die between the age of two months to one year. We don't know why babies die while sleeping.  The mother and father are not responsible for this death. It is a decision made by God. Scientists say that such babies are born while their mom had problems during pregnancy.

A new baby is good news for the mother, the father, the grandparents, and other members of the family. In the United States.  Most deliveries take place in hospitals. Normally, dads go with moms to the hospital for the delivery. If a dad doesn't go, then there is another member of the family that will go with mom and will stay in the hospital with her to help her. When a baby is delivered, they put the baby on the mom's abdomen.  This is called bonding.  By doing this we create a special relationship between mom and baby. This way, the baby will recognize its mother.

As I said before, it is not the decision of a mother to go for a Cesarean. It is the doctor who decides which method to use.  A normal pregnancy takes from 38 to 40 weeks.  Some babies get delivered before 38 weeks; this is called premature delivery. In the United States, 10 percent of deliveries are premature deliveries. As technology develops, these newborn premature babies are kept in the Neonatal Intensive care section. They get special food and special care. They grow.  Usually the babies turn out to be healthy.

There are many things we can do to protect babies. When a baby goes to sleep, we have the baby sleep in a different bed. Have the baby sleep on the back while her/his face is toward the sky so that the baby can breathe properly. Don't cover the baby with blankets and don't put stuffed toys with the babies in the bed. So, if we take these into consideration, there will be no sudden risk to babies' lives.
