Episode 7e--Feminine Health: Family Planning

Dear sisters, I will be talking to you about having babies at an early age plus having several children and their impact on your life and health.

This is your internal decision about when to have babies and when not to and how many. It is solely a private decision to make. But, this will have a serious impact on their lives and your health.

When a woman gets pregnant at an early age, it has negative consequences. This is because she is still considered a child. Anyone getting pregnant before the age of 20, causes issues. Back home, we live together. Parents, brothers, sisters and other members of families live together. If we have many kids, we don't have all the burden on our shoulders because there are others who will take care of them; but here in the United States, things are different. There is individualism. You are responsible for your family. Even if you live with your family.   The United States is very big. Your parents will live far from you. So, you need to have [only] as many kids as you can afford.  The United States is a big country. People live far from each other. Even people move to other states to work. It is good to have kids that you can take care and that we all live a happy life together. Having more kids will cause problems for the family and for the health of kids as well. It is good to have a small family and live a happy life.

Another issue is that raising children is very expensive in the United States. One has to spend around $300,000 to raise a child until age 18. It is good that we have few children because we don't want a burden on our shoulders as well as economic problems.  Contrary to other countries, children don't die in the United States. Healthy children are being delivered. There isn't a risk that one needs to have many children because some of them might die.

Americans want to spend time with their kids, take care of their education and their health. That is why they want a small number of children--to have a happy life and to afford taking care of them.

[I'm not saying it is] bad [if you already have] many children and living together. Living together in big families with parents, grand parents, sisters, aunts, cousins, brothers and others give you some time to relax and not worry about raising your kids yourselves. The kids will be raised under the supervision of these people. and parents have time for other things. They can live a happy life together as well in big families and many kids.
